Definition
Sovereign AI is AI that an organisation runs on infrastructure it controls, with models it can inspect or replace and data, logs and decisions that stay under its own jurisdiction.
Why it matters
Hosting in a local region is not the same as control. A provider subject to foreign law can be compelled to hand over data it controls, wherever the servers are. Sovereign AI answers that by putting the whole system, including models, indexes and logs, under the organisation's own control.
What it includes
- Infrastructure you operate, on-premise or in your own private cloud.
- Models you can swap, typically open-weight models behind a gateway.
- Access control and audit trails you own.
- Code and runbooks you could hand to another supplier.
